Scenic Walks
There are many wonderful walks you can take while staying at Bowentown Beach Holiday Park. You can stroll along the beach or discover the surrounding area on foot.
It doesn’t matter if you go left or right, the scenery is amazing everywhere and the possibilities are endless.
Bowentown Domain
 A series of tracks through the Bowentown Domain offer several walks, wonderful picnic spots and lots of fantastic places to expore. You could drive or walk up the hill right beside Bowentown Beach Holiday Park and visit the ancient Pa-sites of Bowentown Heads.
The Te Ho Pa site on the eastern headland has magnificent views of the harbour and coastland and can be reached by tracks from Bowentown Beach Holiday Park or from the headland car park. From the car park you can also drop steeply down to Cave Bay, a lovely small beach overlooking the harbour entrance, or access Te Kura a Maia pa site on the southern headland.
From Anzac Bay a wide grassy track leads westward up to an area where several tracks meet. Straight ahead leads to Shelly Bay, a sheltered and safe swimming spot. Left leads to a popular fishing area. Turning right leads to the summit where there have been extensive planting of pohutakawa. Another track drops back down to the entrance of the Domain. The loop track continues on around the top of the headland and down to the northern end of Shelly Bay. Stunning views of the upper harbour, Kaimai Ranges and the ocean coastline are the rewards of these tracks.
From Waihi Beach to Orokawa Bay
 The coastal walk from the North of Waihi Beach to Orokawa Bay is a one and a half hour round trip and well worth it. Orokawa Bay and Domain is a scenic reserve with 145 hectares of native bush, including New Zealand’s famous Kauri trees.
Walkers are treated to Orokawa’s secluded beach after about 45 minutes, a perfect spot for relaxing, fishing and picnicking. William Wright Falls can be found about 1.5 km inland from Orokawa Bay and spill over a 28m sheer rock face.
From Orokawa Bay to Homunga Bay
 Homunga Bay is another beautiful bay situated another hour and a half further north along the coast and noted for its Pohutukawa forest. It can be reached from a track at the northern end of Orokawa Bay.
This track is less well-developed than the one from Waihi Beach to Orokawa Bay but it provides spectacular views and a very interesting landscape.
The Karangahake Walkway
 The Karangahake Gorge is a delightful walk down memory lane that is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There are many tracks to choose from, with the main track being approximately 4.5 km long but there are shorter and easier tracks too.
You will enjoy the magnificent beauty of the area, from native bush and steep valleys to the gushing river below.
One of the walkways follows the 1900’s railway and includes a one km long brick tunnel, railway and swing bridges, many old mining relics and spectacular scenery. It is well worth the effort.
Alternatively, you could just relax and enjoy the little cafés and wineries in the Karangahake village.
