It is one of the safest beaches in New Zealand and it is increasingly popular with surfers.
Waihi Beach town itself is small and quite charming, with some unique pottery, art and craft shops.

Sunshine Surf Coaching Surf School offers you the only professional Surf School operating at Waihi Beach.
Head Instructor Trevor Medcalf is highly qualified, very experienced & fully endorsed by Surfing New Zealand & Water Safety New Zealand.
We have been operating since 2000 & have taught over 1200 people how to surf in that time.
Not only will you learn how to ride the waves but how to stay safe while doing so with our comprehensive surf awareness & safety program.
We supply all equipment using only soft surfboards for peace of mind.
We have a great rapport with children but have also taught people up to 72 years of age.
You could be one of the 95% of our clients who do get up & ride waves standing up in their first lesson.
Waihi Beach's north end is one of the safest surf beaches in New Zealand, with gently sloping sand & softly spilling waves which creates the perfect environment for learning to surf.
